100 Degrees

This summer has been incredibly busy to say the least.  I’ve had to miss out on openings for shows because I’m already at the opening for another.  I suppose these are the moments I could use a stunt double…  At least I can vicariously enjoy the Wally Workman Gallery opening for 100 Degrees thanks to the photos.  The exhibit is up now through September 1st and features new work by several of the gallery’s artists.  One of which being mine… you may recognize this painting from an earlier post.  You can also view it here: www.amyguidry.com/succession.html.

"Untitled (Desert)" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 4" x 4"; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

Another painting from the In Our Veins series has found a new home.  Untitled (Desert) is an acrylic on canvas, 4″ x 4,” and will be joining a couple of my other paintings.  It is actually a spin-off from one of my larger paintings, Heads II which can be seen here: www.amyguidry.com/Heads_II.html (and FYI Heads II is one of the paintings included in the upcoming show I’m doing at the Hilliard Museum in Lafayette, LA this September).  View a larger image of Untitled (Desert) here: www.amyguidry.com/untitled04.html.

Beautiful Crime

The UK contemporary art news site Beautiful Crime recently did a Spotlight feature on my latest body of work, In Our Veins.  Editor Ruthie Holloway said of my work, “Balancing on the edge of both photorealism and pop surrealism, American artist, Amy Guidry paints nature with an intricate hand and an inventive mind. Drawing on various influential subject matter as varied as dreams and C.S. Lewis novel characters, Guidry’s world of strange, human-like and captivating characters of animals lends the viewer an unusual insight in to her surrealist yet photorealist painted world – check out the skeletal characters contrasted with the intricately painted rock formations as testament.”  Many paintings from the series are featured which you can read about here: http://beautifulcrime.com/contemporary-art/spotlight-surrealist-painter-amy-guidry.

Visions of the Unnatural World

I’m a little slow to post these given my show at Barrister’s Gallery ended June 23rd.  Nevertheless, I wanted to share photos from the opening reception for my 3-person exhibition, “Visions of the Unnatural World.”  It was a really great exhibit and a great pair of artists – Nikki Crook and Monique Ligons – to show with.  More photos are also online here: http://www.amyguidry.com/events.html.

Art Melt 2012

I recently attended the Preview Party for the 2012 Art Melt at the Shaw Center for the Arts in Baton Rouge, LA.  My painting Survival of the Fittest was one of the works selected for the show by jurors Franklin Sirmans (Chief Curator, Los Angeles County Museum of Art); Ron Platt (Curator, Birmingham Museum of Art); and Thomas Neff (Artist and Professor of Art, LSU).  If you missed the Preview Party and the opening reception, no worries as the exhibit will be up through August 3rd.

One

“One” by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 6″x 6″; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

Finally finished!  I’ve just completed my painting for The Great West Coast Migration traveling exhibition.  The title is One and it is an acrylic on canvas, 6″ x 6.”  The exhibition is organized by PangeaSeed and will benefit sharks and oceans in Japan and abroad.  Given that so many sharks are killed for their fins (a delicacy in Japan and China), this cause was of particular interest to me not only as an artist but as a vegan as well.  People often think of sharks as vicious predators, (thanks, Media!) when in fact, they do not seek out humans and only a small percentage of shark attacks occur each year.  I wanted to focus on them as being part of this world and just as significant as the rest of us.  I combined the human faces with the shark body to illustrate them as one, or equals.  The shark body floats in the air, in keeping with many of my other paintings, but also mimicking the hunted, hanging sharks I so often see.  Such a simple title- One– and such a simple concept, yet we still struggle to see our planet as something to share rather than dominate.

The exhibition will begin this summer at the following galleries:

Seattle – Roq la Rue Gallery- July 13-15
Portland – Grass Hut Co.- July 20-22
San Francisco – Spoke Art Gallery- July 27-28
Los Angeles – LeBasse Project- August 2-4
Costa Mesa – The Artery- August 10-12
San Diego – Space 4 Art- August 17-19

New Painting!

"Stallions" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 6" x 6"; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

I’ve recently added a new painting to my In Our Veins series.  The title is Stallions and it is a 6″ x 6,” acrylic on canvas.  There are several paintings in this series which feature animals, but as heads without bodies, for example.  Because the series pertains to our complex and intricate life cycle, this must also address the issue of animal welfare, as one cannot exist without the other (i.e. humans and the natural world).  Many people view animals as a means to an end, therefore they are viewed as pieces and parts- head, rump, tongue, breast, wing, leg- not whole, sentient beings.  I illustrate this concept while at the same time endowing each animal with emotion and personality, emphasizing qualities that we often deem as only “human.”  Given that horses are such intelligent and majestic animals, I couldn’t think of a better subject.  You can view a larger image of the painting on my website at this direct link: www.amyguidry.com/stallions.html.
