In Progress

Painting in progress by Amy Guidry; Acrylic on canvas; 12″ x 12″; (c) Amy Guidry 2017

After working on a few other projects for upcoming shows, I finally have a chance to get back to my grizzly bear painting.  And I’m at the point where I can work on the face, which is when it really comes to life.  The subject becomes more real to me once I paint the eyes.  Even if I don’t know the subject, it’s when I paint the eyes that they come to life.  They take on a personality.  It’s exciting for me as an artist to witness that transformation.

This painting is an acrylic on canvas, 12″ by 12.”  I’ll be posting the finished piece soon.  In the meantime, you can check out the rest of the In Our Veins series here: https://amyguidry.com/gallery.html.

In Progress

A few photos of my current painting in progress.  I had started this painting just a few days before Grizzly bears were removed from Endangered Species status.  Sad, but fitting.  700 bears in the wild is not a high number, especially if there is a major disaster, and  to ensure no genetic mutations occur due to inbreeding.  Our priorities need to change.  So it’s fitting that I happened to choose a Grizzly as my subject for this piece.  We are steadily creating desert landscapes full of our garbage- in this case, a junkyard of cars- as we clear out the natural habitat of so many species, many endangered.  I used flowers growing out of the bear’s back as a reference to our connection to nature; this lone patch of flowers mirroring the small, shrinking natural landscape.

Art at Home

Sometimes I receive installation images from people after they’ve hung my work in their home.  It’s always nice to see my work again and how it looks in its new space, plus if it’s been included in groupings of work by other artists, that’s always nice to see.  So these are a few shots featuring paintings from my In Our Veins series and Beneath the Surface series.

I’ve finally finished my large painting as well as a couple of smaller pieces.  All three are the latest in my In Our Veins series.  The first is titled On the Rise and is an acrylic on canvas, 10″ wide by 20″ high.  This piece was created in an effort to raise awareness of the plight of animals in the Arctic.  Next is Arise, also an acrylic on canvas, 6″ by 6″ square.  The skull serves as a landscape for wild horses, linking humans and animals.  Lastly is the latest addition to the smaller paintings, Stem, which is 4″ by 4.”  The deer wears a wreath of roses, representing their connection to each other and all of nature.  View all three paintings online here: On the Rise, Arise, and Stem.

A couple of photos of my latest painting in progress.  This will be part of my In Our Veins series.  The first rough layer of paint has been added, and I’m currently working on building the layers of color and detail to the ocean water.  It is an acrylic on canvas, 10″ wide by 20″ high.  More details soon!

The Sum of Its Parts

“The Sum of Its Parts” by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; 11″w x 14″h; SOLD; (c) Amy Guidry 2012

I have finally finished the painting that I mentioned last week.  I’m excited to reveal my latest work in the In Our Veins series titled The Sum of Its Parts.  It is 11″ wide by 14″ high and an acrylic on canvas.  I think I set a record for going through the most paintbrushes in one painting.  I took artistic liberties with the size and placement of the stag’s heart to emphasize its significance and to center it up with the animals falling out.  Without being too graphic, I wanted to illustrate when one species dies, many other species are affected.  Each animal serves a role in the life cycle, together forming the delicate balance of nature.  The trees not only close in the composition, but connect with the animals via the roots seen at the bottom and illustrate the role of plant life and the Earth.  The butterflies, which are often seen throughout this series, serve as metaphors for life and beautiful little reminders of our short existence in the scheme of things.  A larger view of the painting can be seen here: www.amyguidry.com/sum-of-its-parts.html.
