Next Up: New Orleans

It’s been an insanely busy week, hence my lack of posting sooner. The good news is I will be revealing a new painting I’ve been slaving over for quite some time, so be on the lookout for it. I also have an upcoming show which is just a couple of weeks away. I will be in a 3-person exhibit at Barrister’s Gallery in New Orleans next month with Nikki Crook and Monique Ligons. I’ll be showing works from my In Our Veins series, my most recent body of work. This should be a really fun show and opening night will also be held in conjunction with the SCAD Artwalk, May 12th from 6-9pm. One of my more recent paintings has found a new home in time for Valentine’s Day. Interdependent is one of the small works from my In Our Veins series and is an acrylic on canvas, 4″ x 4″ square. This series deals with the life cycle and the impact that each species has on one another, which is represented in Interdependent. The roots of the tree have a vaguely similar texture and color as the deer antlers, so I took liberty in morphing them together to illustrate the connection of all life forms. The butterflies, as seen in several paintings in this series, are a metaphor for life and our mortality. They are beautiful, delicate, and fragile, and here for a short time, reminding us that life is precious.

New Small Works

I’ve added two new small works to the In Our Veins series. Both are acrylic on canvas, 4″ by 4,” and $100 each. I just had better photos taken of them, hence the late post. The first painting is titled “Interdependent” and the next one is “Untitled (Desert).” I use tiny paintbrushes on all my work, but they are especially useful for these small paintings as they consist mostly of tiny little dabs and lines of paint. New Painting!

My latest painting from my “In Our Veins” series is finished! The title of this piece is “Symbiotic” and it is an acrylic on canvas, 11″w x 14″h. I took photos as I went along to give some insight into my process of painting. I started with an initial sketch directly onto the canvas. After laying out the placement of all the animals and the tree roots, I started my first rough layer of paint. Then I continued to build upon the painting with several more layers, working a “section” at a time, each getting more detailed along the way.
