6@549

I thought I would share some photos from the opening I had the other night for the 6@549 show. The opening was a big hit at Gallery 549 during the Second Saturday Artwalk for March. The gallery was literally packed with people the entire time. Which is great, of course, but sometimes you can’t get a good view of the art when there’s such a large crowd. So, hopefully this will remind everyone to go by and see the show while it’s still up for the next couple of weeks.

More photos will be posted on my website soon, so check out www.AmyGuidry.com. And if you are in the area, be sure to check out the show. This is a great opportunity to see the work in person. Artists featured are myself (Amy Guidry), Deborah Norsworthy, Diane Pecnik, Lisa Ayres, Marie DesJardins, and Mary Attwood.

Here’s the Latest

"Vulnerable" by Amy Guidry; (c) Amy Guidry 2010
"Vulnerable" by Amy Guidry; (c) Amy Guidry 2010

I have recently finished another addition to my new series of work. This painting is titled “Vulnerable” and will be featured in my group exhibition, 6@549,  at Gallery 549 in Lafayette, LA next month. It’s an acrylic on canvas, 24″ x 12.” I included a hare in the last painting from this series but this time he is a main character. The concept of vulnerability is interesting to me since as humans, we assume that we are invincible- be it physically or emotionally. Obviously this isn’t true, and sometimes it’s the things that we least expect that harm us.

Right Around the Corner

Amy Guidry with her painting, "Introspective" (SOLD)

I’ve been busy preparing for my next exhibit and it’s just about here.  October 10th is the opening night for my solo exhibition at Galerie Lafayette.  If you’re in the area, you may already know that this is the same evening for the next Artwalk in downtown Lafayette, LA.  So plenty of galleries will be open late and have new exhibitions up as well.  I’m excited to have this show since I will be revealing new work in addition to some pieces you may have seen on my website, www.AmyGuidry.com.  I’ll have many paintings from the 5″ x 5″ series on display as well, which are perfect for those getting a head start on their gift shopping.

So mark your calendars!  I will be in attendance, so stop by and say hello.  October 10th from 5-8(ish) pm at Galerie Lafayette on Jefferson Street.

I’m Quite the Busy Bee

"Isaac" by Amy Guidry; portrait commission

Whenever I agree to do a show, or a commission, or a press release, or all of the above, it doesn’t seem overwhelming at the time. And perhaps it’s because I agree to do all of these things in a short span of time that makes it overwhelming at times. I really don’t know when to stop, though, because I’m one of those people that is always going. You know the ones. I’m going even if I’m sick. I don’t have time for germs! I’ve got paintings to finish and treadmills to run on. You get the picture. It’s just hard for me to sit still.

So maybe this helps to explain why my posts have been on hiatus recently. A small hiatus, but still, a hiatus. I’m just now catching up on things. So aside from wrapping up one show, then getting into another show (No Dead Artists), and gearing up for my next solo show (October is right around the corner!), I’ve also finished another commission piece. This is an 11″ x 14″ painting of “Isaac.” I’ve actually done two paintings of Issac, but don’t have any photos to share of the second one yet. I’ll get there eventually… Anyway, I may have to remove some work from my website before I add any of these new pieces because it’s getting to be a bit full. However, you can still see more of my work at www.AmyGuidry.com. Or in person at Galerie Lafayette next month!

The Next Place to Catch My Work

"Special Ingredients" by Amy Guidry; Copyright Amy Guidry 2009

I know, I know, not the most creative title for a post. Maybe I’m just tired…it’s been a long day and I’ve been out and about in this dreaded heat. Summer in Louisiana is miserable. Sooo, how appropriate that my next show is up north. R. Coury Fine Art Gallery in Savage, Maryland has a group show currently up for the next couple of months. My work is included in the exhibit, which is opening for their 3rd Friday Artwalk. The reception will take place June 19th from 6-8pm. So if you’re in the area, check it out. Or depending on how badly you want to get out of this heat, maybe you’ll take a trip up to MD. It’s at least 10 degrees cooler up there and probably not as humid… And if you’d like to just stay put and enjoy your air conditioning, you can always go to my website to see my work at www.AmyGuidry.com!

The Newest Addition

"Liberty" by Amy Guidry; From the New Realm series. Copyright Amy Guidry 2009

I must be feeling guilty about my blog abandonment since I’ve got two posts in one week… So here it is, the latest painting of my “New Realm” series. Not even on the website yet! Consider this a sneak preview that only my blog readers are in the know about. Feeling special yet? Okay, okay, so here are the details. The title is “Liberty” and this is another large piece since it is 36″ wide by 48″ high. And as per usual, it is an acrylic on canvas. This piece features the purple butterflies from many of the other paintings in the series. I thought of this one as an extension of “Release” which also features the purple butterflies seen from above. This painting will be part of my solo exhibition this October at Galerie Lafayette in downtown Lafayette, LA. If you’re in the area, you won’t want to miss the opportunity to see these paintings in person. The photo here does not do the piece justice. Anyway, if you’d like to find out more about my upcoming exhibits, sign up for my newsletter under my website contact page. And while you’re there, check out the rest of my work- www.AmyGuidry.com.

2nd Saturday Artwalk

"Tranquility" by Amy Guidry; From the New Realm series. Copyright Amy Guidry 2009

Okay, so this won’t be the next upcoming 2nd Saturday Artwalk, but it will be a 2nd Saturday in the future… October, that is. So here in Lafayette, Louisiana, we have a 2nd Saturday Artwalk each month in the downtown area. All of the galleries are open late, usually until 8 or 9 pm depending on the crowd. So I will be having a solo exhibition at Galerie Lafayette, which is located in Jefferson St. Market this coming October. This will actually be the second solo show I’ve had at Galerie Lafayette. I will have all new work for this exhibit! The opening reception will be held during the Artwalk, which will be October 10th from 6-8pm. More details about the show will follow closer to time. In the meantime, you can view my work at www.AmyGuidry.com.

Where Everybody Knows Your Name, and They’re Always Glad You Came

"Was It a Dream?" by Amy Guidry; Visit www.AmyGuidry.com

I wanted to take a moment to write a review of sorts of a local gallery in Lafayette, LA. I’m always interested to see what others are up to, especially when they do their own thing as opposed to just following the mainstream. So when your gallery has its own artwalk and is situated away from the “usual suspects” (i.e. downtown gallery circuit), then it must be Visions Art Gallery.

There is a variety of artwork on the walls at any given time. Some of the artists are well-known in the community, while some are just starting out. There is pretty much something for everyone since the work ranges in style and medium. I recently purchased a Tom Ladousa ceramic piece from there (on sale) and have been eyeballing some de Kooning-esque pieces by Dutch Kepler.

Another quality about the gallery worth noting is the overall atmosphere. This is not a stuffy gallery. If you are in the witness protection program, you may not want to go here because these ladies will know your name before you leave. Bonnie Camos (the director) knows everyone and freely introduces everyone as well. Put it this way- if Bonnie has a myspace page (I have yet to look) then she must have a billion friends. And she genuinely takes an interest in them.

Visions hosts its own artwalk every third Saturday of the month. This falls after the usual 2nd Saturday Artwalk held downtown in Lafayette, and also allows Visions to spotlight its own exhibits. Having only one exhibit to attend makes it easier to take your time and meet the artists as opposed to rushing through to make it to the next gallery before closing. (Although I do love the downtown artwalk as well.) But even if you can’t make it to an opening reception, you can always go during the day, enjoy the art, enjoy the coffee, and make plenty of friends. And maybe add them to your myspace page…

Saturday Artwalk- Not One, But Two Shows!

"Anti-Aging" by Amy Guidry; 30"w x 24"h; acrylic on canvas

In an attempt to get my readers out there viewing my work in person, I want to inform you of two shows I will be in this Saturday.  As you may or may not know, this Saturday- May 10th- is the 2nd Saturday Artwalk in dowtown Lafayette.  In addition to the usual gallery openings, the AcA will unveil the Southern Open 2008, their juried exhibition featuring works from 5 Gulf states.  The show was juried by Peter Frank, an art historian and art critic, who frequently writes for LA Weekly.  There were over 770 entries and 105 works were selected.  One of my paintings, “Anti-Aging,” is featured in the exhibit.

The opening reception starts at 6, in conjunction with the Artwalk.  Peter Frank will be in attendance and is scheduled to give out awards at 7pm.  I will definitely be at the exhibit, so feel free to say hi or offer me some free porn or acne medication as do my spam fans.

"New Realm" by Amy Guidry; SOLD; acrylic on 100-yr. old ceiling tile

Also scheduled during the Artwalk is the Heymann Historic Ceiling Tile Project and Exhibit.  The exhibit will take place at Galerie Lafayette (located in Jefferson Street Market).  My tile, “New Realm,” will be on display.  My tile has actually already sold, but its new owner has graciously obliged to leave the tile up for the exhibit before it is shipped to its new home in Montana.  So this will be my last chance to say goodbye, and your final opportunity to see my work in person.

I will be running back and forth between the shows and checking out the other gallery openings while I am there.  Please stop by!  Artwalk is from 6-8ish, depending on the crowds.  You can see for yourself why so many people say my work looks even better in person.
