I have a new exhibition coming up in just a couple of weeks! Some of my latest works from my “In Our Veins” series will be featured in a group exhibit at Barrister’s Gallery in New Orleans. The exhibit is titled “Artists Who Wish They Were Dead” and will be guest-curated by artist Dan Tague. I think this will prove to be an interesting show- I’m excited to see the results. The opening reception will be August 13th from 6-9pm in conjunction with the Second Saturday Artwalk held in the New Orleans St. Claude Arts District (SCAD).
The Prospect New Orleans Benefit- Throwdown.1.5- last Saturday was a big hit. Many people were in attendance after the Julia St. Artwalk in New Orleans. My painting “Kerry” now has a new home (see previous post). And I met some other exhibiting artists as well. So if you missed the event, here are a few photos to enjoy the event vicariously. This weekend I will be one of the artists featured in the Throwdown.1.5 auction to benefit the Prospect New Orleans Biennial. It’s for a great cause and it’s in New Orleans, so all the more reason to go! I am honored to be included amongst such great artists, some of which are from my own area. My painting “Kerry” from my 2005/2006 series will be up for auction. It is an acrylic on canvas, framed, and total size dimensions are 16″w x 13″h (view more of my work at www.AmyGuidry.com). The event will be held at Stage 3, Secondline Stages in New Orleans this Saturday, February 5th from 8-11pm. So if you are out and about for the artwalk, stop by afterwards. I nearly forgot to post photos for the exhibition I have going on right now… the opening reception was in November, but the exhibit is currently open through December 30th. (So there’s still time to see it even if you are stuck in a shopping mall somewhere until the 25th.) I have a few photos to share from opening night for “Like a Prayer: Reflections on the 21st C Feminine” at Barrister’s Gallery in New Orleans, LA. I’m sure you’re thinking that’s an interesting title… It’s actually the name of an upcoming show I will be in next week. “Like a Prayer: Reflections of the 21st C Feminine” is a group exhibition that will open November 13th at Barrister’s Gallery in New Orleans. The show was curated by Martina Batan, the director of Ronald Feldman Fine Art in New York. I’m excited to be in this show due to the lineup of artists as well as this being my first exhibit at Barrister’s Gallery. The opening coincides with the Artwalk held in the St. Claude Arts District of New Orleans. In addition, if you may recall, this is also the opening night of the Multispecies Salon, which I am also included in. (No worries, both events take place in the same arts district.) Prospect 1.5 (preview to the Prospect 2 Biennial) will also be taking place during this time, so numerous galleries, museums, and alternative spaces have events scheduled. So if you happen to be in New Orleans this month, now is a great time to check out the art events.

My work was recently selected for inclusion in the Multispecies Salon 3: Swarm to be held in New Orleans this November. The exhibit will take place in three gallery spaces- The Front, Kawliga Studios, and Ironworks. As stated on their website, the exhibit will “use art to address a series of interrelated questions about nature: Which species flourish, and which fail, when natural and cultural worlds intermingle and collide? What happens when the bodies of organisms, and even entire ecosystems, are brought into schemes of biotechnology and dreams of biocapitalism? And finally, with particular relevance to New Orleans: In the aftermath of disaster–in a blasted landscape that has been transformed by multiple catastrophes–what are the possibilities of biocultural hope?”
Multispecies Salon was first organized by anthropologist Eben Kirksey and friends as an outshoot of the annual convention of the Association of American Anthropologists (AAA). The AAA will hold their convention in New Orleans from November 18-21, 2010. The Multispecies Salon will schedule a speaking series as well as a reception for anthropologists who will be in New Orleans for the convention on Thursday, November 18.
There are also three themes to the exhibit: “Edible Companions,” “Life in the Age of Biotechnology,” and “Hope in a Blasted Landscape.” Since this is still early, I don’t have all the details yet, but I believe my work will be in the “Edible Companions” exhibit at The Front gallery. The opening for the event will be November 13th as part of the Second Saturday Artwalk in the St. Claude Arts District. The exhibit will be up through December 5th. Yes, I know that titling this “Homecoming” conjures up thoughts of football and brightly colored taffeta. However, that’s not the type of homecoming I’m referring to. I’m exhibiting in the “Where Are They Now” exhibit at the Slidell Cultural Center at City Hall in Slidell, Louisiana. I was a student in the Talented Art Program during my junior high and high school days in St. Tammany Parish, so as an arts professional, I have been invited back to take part of their exhibit. The Times Picayune recently posted an article about the show, featuring one of my paintings- the direct link – www.nola.com. (Though it was too late to correct this for the papers, my work was featured on MTV’s Real World: Hollywood, not New Orleans.) Opening night will be this Friday- August 27th from 7-9pm. The exhibit will remain up through September 25th at City Hall.
I also found out that the Slidell Commission on the Arts has selected my work to be featured in a solo exhibition in the 2011-2012 cultural season. The exhibit will take place at the Slidell Cultural Center at City Hall. I’ll be sure to post more details closer to time. More information regarding shows can be found at www.AmyGuidry.com. I received some exciting news in the mail the other day. My work has been selected for inclusion in the LaGrange National XXVI Biennial Exhibition at the LaGrange Art Museum. The juror for the exhibit happens to be New Orleans’ own J. Richard Gruber, Director of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. The exhibit will be held at the LaGrange Art Museum in LaGrange, GA. I’ve shown in Atlanta before, but this will be a first for me in LaGrange. So more good news- there will be a color catalog of the exhibition and there will be Purchase Awards granted. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Okay, details- the exhibit will be on display from February 26th through April 17th, 2010. Hopefully with such a long exhibition period, more of you will have the opportunity to see the work in person. As I wait for my brother to get me a few copies of the New Orleans Gambit, I checked it out online today knowing that the review of the 13th Annual NO DEAD ARTISTS would be there. I was happy to see that my work was mentioned first in addition to the fact that I was one of a handful of artists that were mentioned from the show. What a nice surprise! The review was written by D. Eric Bookhardt and titled “Triskaidekafolio.” I had no idea if that was even a word, so thanks to the internet I found out this was Mr. Bookhardt’s take on triskaidekaphobia, which is an irrational fear of the number 13. Wow, seems I’m going to be on the eastern side of Louisiana yet again. I currently have a solo exhibit up at the Oak Street Gallery in Hammond, LA (which opens this Friday!) and now I will have a show in New Orleans coming up next month. Lots of driving is on my future agenda… I found out today that my work was selected for inclusion in “No Dead Artists,” which is a juried exhibition held annually at Jonathan Ferrara Gallery in New Orleans. Jurors for this year’s show were Miranda Lash, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the New Orleans Museum of Art; Charles Whited, New Orleans, LA; and John Kemp, writer, ARTNews, Art & Antiquities, American Artist, Louisiana Life, and editor of LA Cultural Vistas.
