Sold (New Painting)

"Untitled" by Amy Guidry; SOLD; acrylic on canvas; (c) Amy Guidry 2010

I’m posting my latest painting… I had photos taken and it sold the very next day. So I never actually had it posted on here beforehand or on my website, www.AmyGuidry.com. So here’s the first look… This is “Untitled”, a 6″x 6″ painting from my “In Our Veins” series. It’s inspired by another painting from the same series- “Untitled (Heads).” As a vegan, I’m always perplexed/frustrated/disturbed by the concept of animals being nothing more than parts- head, hoof, breast, wing, rib, rump, the list goes on. Animals are viewed as merely a means to an end. So with “Untitled (Heads)” and this newest painting, “Untitled,” I wanted to convey this concept in a Surrealist manner. As with its predecessor, this is an acrylic on canvas. All the tiny hairs, spots, and eyes of the ram, squirrel, and turkey caused me to go through several 00 round brushes.  So several trips to Michaels later, here is the finished piece!

On another note, as a reminder I am having a contest to win one of my New Realm 5″ x 5″ paintings. To enter, sign up for my newsletter at this link- AmyGuidry.com Sweepstakes. One out of the first 200 people to sign up will win!

"Burden to Bear" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; (c) Amy Guidry 2010

It wasn’t that long ago that I posted this painting, and I am writing about it again already. “Burden to Bear” has recently sold and is now in its new home. This is an acrylic on canvas from my “In Our Veins” series. I won’t go into too much detail seeing as I just wrote about it, so if you missed the previous post, just scroll down a little and you can read up about this painting. The image is small, so to get a better view, visit my website at this direct link: www.AmyGuidry.com.

Burden to Bear

"Burden to Bear" by Amy Guidry; SOLD; acrylic on canvas; (c) Amy Guidry 2010

I have a new painting to share- “Burden to Bear” (hmm, rhyming not intentional…). So I’ve been putting in some extra hours in my studio- sounds nicer than “overtime.” Anyway, this is another addition to my “In Our Veins” series and is an acrylic on canvas, 11″ wide by 14″ high. There are a lot of tiny details in this one that don’t translate well via jpegs much less a tiny photo on here. You can get a better look on my website. I love to hear what others feel about my work, but I’m going to go ahead and share a few of my own feelings about this piece. I am a vegan, and that does influence my work in subtle ways, some more so than others. I’m very concerned with the plight of nature and our planet. The animals and bones and skulls seen atop the “deer” are my own personal representations of those affected by the wrongs that we commit against others or the environment (be it land, animals, humans). I decided to keep it organic and not include nonliving things. I should also mention that throughout this series, pay special attention to the animals. Many of them have “human” qualities- such as animals with what would be considered “human-looking” eyes, or expressions, or their posture. I felt this gave them more significance, as I certainly consider them to be important. And to view the painting, please visit www.AmyGuidry.com.

Like a Prayer

"Inner Peace?" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; (c) Amy Guidry 2010
"Inner Peace?" by Amy Guidry; acrylic on canvas; (c) Amy Guidry 2010

I’m sure you’re thinking that’s an interesting title… It’s actually the name of an upcoming show I will be in next week. “Like a Prayer: Reflections of the 21st C Feminine” is a group exhibition that will open November 13th at Barrister’s Gallery in New Orleans. The show was curated by Martina Batan, the director of Ronald Feldman Fine Art in New York. I’m excited to be in this show due to the lineup of artists as well as this being my first exhibit at Barrister’s Gallery. The opening coincides with the Artwalk held in the St. Claude Arts District of New Orleans. In addition, if you may recall, this is also the opening night of the Multispecies Salon, which I am also included in. (No worries, both events take place in the same arts district.) Prospect 1.5 (preview to the Prospect 2 Biennial) will also be taking place during this time, so numerous galleries, museums, and alternative spaces have events scheduled. So if you happen to be in New Orleans this month, now is a great time to check out the art events.

“Like a Prayer” will be up November 13th through December 30th. The opening reception will be held from 6-9pm. For more information, visit this direct link to Barrister’s Gallery. For more information regarding my work, visit www.AmyGuidry.com.

New Painting!

My latest painting from my “In Our Veins” series is finished! The title of this piece is “Symbiotic” and it is an acrylic on canvas, 11″w x 14″h. I took photos as I went along to give some insight into my process of painting. I started with an initial sketch directly onto the canvas. After laying out the placement of all the animals and the tree roots, I started my first rough layer of paint. Then I continued to build upon the painting with several more layers, working a “section” at a time, each getting more detailed along the way.

Into the Wild

My work was recently selected for inclusion in the Multispecies Salon 3: Swarm to be held in New Orleans this November. The exhibit will take place in three gallery spaces- The Front, Kawliga Studios, and Ironworks. As stated on their website, the exhibit will “use art to address a series of interrelated questions about nature: Which species flourish, and which fail, when natural and cultural worlds intermingle and collide? What happens when the bodies of organisms, and even entire ecosystems, are brought into schemes of biotechnology and dreams of biocapitalism? And finally, with particular relevance to New Orleans: In the aftermath of disaster–in a blasted landscape that has been transformed by multiple catastrophes–what are the possibilities of biocultural hope?”

Multispecies Salon was first organized by anthropologist Eben Kirksey and friends as an outshoot of the annual convention of the Association of American Anthropologists (AAA). The AAA will hold their convention in New Orleans from November 18-21, 2010. The Multispecies Salon will schedule a speaking series as well as a reception for anthropologists who will be in New Orleans for the convention on Thursday, November 18.

There are also three themes to the exhibit: “Edible Companions,” “Life in the Age of Biotechnology,” and “Hope in a Blasted Landscape.” Since this is still early, I don’t have all the details yet, but I believe my work will be in the “Edible Companions” exhibit at The Front gallery. The opening for the event will be November 13th as part of the Second Saturday Artwalk in the St. Claude Arts District. The exhibit will be up through December 5th. As I get more details such as time, etc. I will post as soon as possible. In the meantime, if you’d like to see more of my work, be sure to check out my website at www.AmyGuidry.com.

The newest volume of Studio Visit magazine is finally out! I received my copy a couple of weeks ago, so I’m a little late in posting… I just scanned the photos now. This is the Summer edition, so it came out at the end of August. Studio Visit is published by The Open Studios Press and is the sister publication to New American Paintings. The juror was Dina Deitsch, the Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art, deCordova Sculpture Park + Museum in Lincoln, MA. My painting, “The Wild West,” was selected for inclusion and comes from my latest series of work, “In Our Veins.” If you’d like to see a larger image, as well as a close-up, the direct link is here- www.AmyGuidry.com– (note: scroll down for the close-up).
