Pathway, the coaster that I painted for La Luz de Jesus Gallery’s Coaster Show recently sold. Pathway is an acrylic on cardstock, 4″ tondo. I’ve had a lot of interest in Studio Visit Magazine as of late. Hopefully most of you have found your answers in some of my recent posts. So low and behold, I received an acceptance letter (and email!) from Studio Visit Magazine. My work was selected for inclusion in the Summer 2010 edition. So this will be Volume…10? Not sure, but I think there’s a Winter edition about to come out…then the Summer edition. The juror for this volume was Dina Deitsch, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art, deCordova Sculpture Park + Museum in Lincoln, MA. For those who don’t know, Studio Visit is published by The Open Studios Press and is the sister publication to New American Paintings. It is a nationally conducted juried competition featuring 2D and 3D work. Oh, and in case you haven’t seen it- the painting that will be in the magazine is “The Wild West” which I’ve included a small image of here. There’s a closeup of it on my website www.AmyGuidry.com
I know that it’s the holiday season and all, but I just had to post my newest painting. It’s jolly, I know. I’m fresh out of snowman paintings… Yes, the timing is probably off, but I’m so excited to finally share this new piece. It’s so new I haven’t even named the series yet. Any ideas??
This painting is titled “The Wild West” and is a 24″ x 30″ acrylic on canvas. It’s not on my website yet, as I am working on a couple more pieces to put on there as a group. Otherwise this one would be all by its lonesome. It took me forever to finish this painting. The others are not as grueling, but this one took over 188 hours. I’m surprised my hand hasn’t fallen off.

It’s late for me this evening, but I realized after slaving over a three-layer tofu cheesecake that I hadn’t posted on my blog! Soooo I decided to go ahead and give you fine folks a peek at what I’m currently working on. Normally I like to wait until a piece is finished, but this one is close enough, I figure why not. It’s Thanksgiving after all. Though this isn’t what I’d consider a festive painting… This is one of the most surreal pieces I’ve done so far. I’ve taken an approach more in keeping with that of the original Surrealist movement by using images from dreams (or in that twilight phase of sleep). I don’t have a title for this piece yet, but I’m thinking I might leave it that way. So right now I’m just referring to it as “the painting with the horse and the carcass in the desert…” (I think it’s catchy. I just returned from a recent trip to Hot Springs, Arkansas which was host to the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival. I saw a great film about the Low Brow art scene called “New Brow: Contemporary Underground Art,” directed by Tanem Davidson. And though I didn’t see it at the festival, I did buy a DVD of “Automorphosis,” directed by Harrod Blank. Several “art cars” were driving about through the city (as you can see from my photos) as part of the promotion of “Automorphosis.”

I was also fortunate enough to run into legendary artist Ron English. Of course I can’t just publish his art on here, but you can check it out on his website. Mr. English was also in attendance at the film festival. I had a chance to talk with him about the Low Brow art movement and some of the questions that “New Brow” raised. For instance, the dichotomy of low brow vs. high brow art and its role in blue chip galleries. As Mr. English pointed out, what is called “Low Brow” today has much evolved from the original Low Brow artists, and has gained popularity among top collectors. All in all, I think that aside from collectors, it’s the artists that champion the work. Galleries may see a distinction between what is considered high brow or low brow art, but its the artists that generate the excitement over the work and add to its credibility.

For those of you planning on attending a local exhibition of my work (I tried to schedule more local shows this year for a change!), I have one coming up this summer! I will be showing at the Oak Street Gallery in Hammond, Louisiana this August. It will be a solo exhibition and will be up for the entire month. The opening reception will be August 21st, which is in conjunction with “Hot August Night.” “Hot August Night” is an annual event featuring wine tasting, art exhibits, live music, shopping and fine dining in Historic Downtown Hammond, LA. So if you are in the area, you can plan on a full itinerary for the evening!
The opening will be held from 6-9pm, while the festival itself is until 10 pm. I will be in attendance at the opening, so feel free to stop by and meet me in person!* There will be many paintings that have never been previously exhibited. All work is from my New Realm series, and will also feature the 5″ x 5″ series.

And I just can’t hide it. If there’s an award for dorky blog titles, I’m sure to receive it shortly. Anyway, as you may have already surmised, I have some good news. No, great news. I’ve been dying to find out the results of a competition I entered recently and as per usual with these things, the results were not announced on time. (I’m no math whiz, but I’d have to say this happens about 97% of the time.) So I was just taking care of emails and got my announcement! My work has been accepted into the 2009 Art Melt to be held at the Brunner Gallery in the Shaw Center for the Arts! Yea! So here’s the really exciting part… normally they only have one juror, but this year they had three. One of which happened to be the curator of Prospect 1, the Art Biennial held in New Orleans recently. Here’s the listing of jurors from the Art Melt site:
Dan Cameron is the visual arts director at the New Orleans Center for Contemporary Art. Cameron served as the director and curator for Prospect.1, the largest biennial of international contemporary art in the United States, recently held in New Orleans. Cameron has previously served as artistic director of the eighth Istanbul Biennial and curated the 2006 Taipei Biennial.
Ann Connelly is a Baton Rouge-based gallery owner with more than 18 years of experience as an art dealer. Her gallery, Ann Connelly Fine Art, represents a wide variety of local and national contemporary artists who have achieved recognition in national collections and publications.
Brian Young is the curator at the Academy Art Museum in Easton, Md. With more than a decade of curatorial experience in both traditional and contemporary art, Young has a history of success at Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. and the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock.
The painting that was chosen is “Metamorphosis” from my New Realm series. It happens to be one of my favorite pieces, so I’m especially happy it was selected. (If you’re new to my work, that’s a photo of it on the left.) The opening reception will take place July 10th from 6:30-10 pm at the Shaw Center for the Arts in downtown Baton Rouge, LA. I know, I know, not the most creative title for a post. Maybe I’m just tired…it’s been a long day and I’ve been out and about in this dreaded heat. Summer in Louisiana is miserable. Sooo, how appropriate that my next show is up north. R. Coury Fine Art Gallery in Savage, Maryland has a group show currently up for the next couple of months. My work is included in the exhibit, which is opening for their 3rd Friday Artwalk. The reception will take place June 19th from 6-8pm. So if you’re in the area, check it out. Or depending on how badly you want to get out of this heat, maybe you’ll take a trip up to MD.
