Weird title for my post, right?  It’s actually the title of an exhibition that my work will be in next month.  I just got the great news this weekend.  I submitted my work back in September and just hoped for the best.  Apparently it worked…  Anyway, the show is called Learn Promote Defend and is sponsored by the Center for Civil and Human Rights.  That’s a mouthful, so I’ll go by CCHR for short.  The CCHR is located in Atlanta, GA and is having the exhibition in conjunction with a 10-day program called 60 Years of Progress…10 Days of Recognition.

Learn Promote Defend will take place on December 10th at 7 pm at Mason Murer Fine Art in Atlanta.  All three of my paintings (which is the max submission limit!) will be in the show.  The jury selecting works consisted of Sylvie Fortin, Executive Director/Editor of Art Papers magazine; Christopher Hauck, Atlanta-based painter, installation and multi-media artist; Jodi Hauptman, Curator of Drawings of the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), and Louise E. Shaw, Curator of the Global Health Museum, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The paintings that I will be exhibiting are: Choices, Everything’s Coming Up Roses, and And Justice For All. Void Where Prohibited.  These paintings are from my Beneath the Surface series.  All three relate to different articles in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  Some of them overlap and relate to more than one article, but all three had to relate to the UDHR in at least one article.

Apparently it doesn’t take more than one comment on here to get me to do something (aka Zack). Which is why I am posting my new painting. Yes, as mentioned before, this is a new piece that I will be showing at Wally Workman Gallery in Austin, TX next month. I was invited to participate in the exhibition since I am one of their newly represented artists. The show is titled “Twelve,” and there are twelve artists and it will be held in the twelfth month. In case you hadn’t noticed, there’s a theme going here…. So amongst all the artists in this gallery, I was asked to show and was thrilled to participate.

So here is the big reveal! My painting is called “Lightness” and is 24 inches wide by 48 inches high. Kind of a different format for me, but it suited the composition the best. And these dimensions are divisible by….twelve. Anyway, in keeping with the theme, I used twelve butterflies in the piece. This is open to interpretation. For me, the butterflies represent change and metamorphosis, and represent the subject’s metamorphosis as well. This could involve twelve steps, twelve months, however you want to view the process of change. Regardless, this piece is another installement to my New Realm series, so again you see the heroine of my “story” in this painting as well.

A Few Announcements

Okay, if you are a regular reader of this blog, you may recall me mentioning a great review of my work in Las Vegas CityLife magazine. Well, you can now finally read it on my website. The article was written by Jarret Keene and covers my New Realm solo exhibition that I recently had in Las Vegas, NV. You can read the article at www.AmyGuidry.com/press02.html.

For all my local readers, and maybe those so in love with my work they are willing to travel to Lafayette, LA to see it, I will be having another solo exhibit at Galerie Lafayette in October of 2009! The previous solo show I had there was packed with people, no kidding, and the work was very well-received. It’s a great space- huge, too, so I will be putting a lot of work in there- so this exhibit will not disappoint! Twelve. That’s right. What does it mean to you? In this case, I’m referring to a group exhibition I will be participating in later this year during, yes, the twelfth month. The show is titled “Twelve” and is slated to open December 6th at Wally Workman Gallery in Austin, Texas. In keeping with the theme, twelve artists have been asked to participate. I was one of them, so I’m thrilled and honored to be included. Each artist will have a piece pertaining to the number or, perhaps, concept of 12. I won’t spoil the surprise so you will just have to wait to see my painting!

I will say this. It’s a large piece. That’s all for now. And I am excited that it will be among other artists whose work I admire greatly. I don’t want to spoil that either. This will be my first exhibit at Wally Workman since I am new to the gallery. They represent my work in the Austin area, so if you live in Texas, be sure to stop by and see my work in person. Ameri-Dreaming: Art and American Culture

I was recently selected to show my work in an upcoming exhibit, “Ameri-Dreaming: Art and American Culture.” I was thrilled because aside from being another opportunity to get my work out in the public eye, this is also a chance to show my social commentary paintings. Three works will be in the show at the Claypool-Young Art Gallery, which is a university art gallery at Morehead State University in Morehead, KY.

These are some of my favorite pieces, not just because of their content, but also aesthetically. My friend Scott is the model for “Complacent,” which is also the image used on the promo card for the show. (See image to the left.) Also included are “Special Ingredients,” and the ever-so-appropriate “The United States of Consumerism.” (Could there be better timing??)

If you are in Kentucky, or will be there soon, be sure to check out the show. The opening is October 8th from 6-8pm, and the exhibit will run through October 31st. Other artists in the show include Margarita Benitez, Steve Coy, Marianne Fourie, Shayne Hull, John Judge, Lisa Link, Joshu Lucas, Matthew Mosher, Michael Runnels, Halide Salam, Steve Snell, Sarah Sorg, Mangi Weir, and Dan Younger.

Many Faces of Portraiture

My portrait work will be featured in an invitational exhibit called “The Many Faces of Portraiture” opening this month.  The show will be held in Covington at the Art House on N. Columbia Street, which also serves at the St. Tammany Art Association Building.  For those of you who don’t know, you may want to bring your scuba gear when heading over to Louisiana, thanks to Hurricane Gustav.  (Actually, it wasn’t that bad, but right now we are still getting major thunderstorms and tornado warnings.)  Anyway, the show must go on! 

The opening will be September 13th (yes, I have a lot of openings revolving around this date- see previous posts) from 6-9pm at the Art House.  There are some other artists in the show which you may recognize from the New Orleans/Northshore area.  They include Katherine Buchanan, Adrian Deckbar, Alan Flattmann, Peggy Hesse, Bernard Klichman, Isoko Onodera, Lyn Taylor, Alexander Stolin, Elise Toups, and of course, me!  (If you haven’t figured it out by now, or are new to this blog- welcome!- I’m Amy Guidry).  The show is curated by Robin Hamaker of the Brunner Gallery in Covington.

New shows, New Work, New, New, New!!

New Work:

I have completed several small paintings from my New Realm series. You can view the pieces at www.AmyGuidry.com under the 5” x 5” series.

Shows:

The New Realm series will be featured at Henri & Odette (formerly Jennifer Marie Gallery) in Las Vegas, NV. The opening reception will be September 12th from 6-8pm. The gallery has moved to a larger location so the show was rescheduled to September. The exhibit will run through the end of October.

I will be exhibiting my work in “Ameri-Dreaming: Art & American Culture.” The show is scheduled for October 8- 31, 2008 in the Claypool-Young Art Gallery at Morehead State University in Morehead, KY.

I will also participate in “Circus Show and Other Atrocities” this coming September. My work will be featured among 60 other invited artists from the US, UK, and Canada. The show will be held at A Bitchin’ Space in Sacramento, CA.

In addition, my work has been selected for the Ohr National Challenge juried exhibition. The show will be on display at the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art in Biloxi, MS from September 19th through November 10th.

Also, I have been invited to show in the Many Faces of Portraiture invitational exhibition. The show will open September 13th at the Art House in Covington, LA.

Representation:

I have recently attained gallery representation in Austin, TX. The Wally Workman gallery will now represent me exclusively in the Austin area. Their website is www.wallyworkmangallery.com

Publications:

The Daily Advertiser did a feature on my work upon the Zigler Art Museum’s acquisition of my painting “Cedric.” “Cedric” is part of the Louisiana artists collection, which will be a traveling collection, and includes work by renowned artists Clementine Hunter and William Tolliver. My work has been selected for the fall edition of Studio Visit Magazine to be published this year. The juror was Carl Belz, Director Emeritus of The Rose Art Museum of Brandeis University. The magazine is scheduled to be available in October and is published by The Open Studios Press.
